History
The Paperworks Program has been around for over 18 years, in one way, shape or form. It started with an innovative teacher at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District (TBAISD) named Tim Coffey. Tim taught students with severe and multiple disabilities and he wanted to get his students involved with recycling. At the time, Tim knew nothing about papermaking, but wanted his students to create something of beauty out of the recycling – so, he quickly learned!
Paperworks grew out of this classroom activity to become the onsite work training experience for students, age 16-26, who are in need of functional “real world” life skills. The Adult Work Center (TBAISD) Paperworks program has grown over the years through amazing administrative and school board support; staff creativity and community commitment. The school program joined forces with Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan to grow job opportunities for an expanded population of people with needs. This is now called Paperworks Studio™. This business trains and employs many individuals in the Traverse City region who have barriers to employment, need a more supportive environment AND have a real, genuine WANT to work. The results of this partnership are evident in the beautiful product offerings you see on this website today!
